Luminosity

Luminosity

Mid summer; the eve of the longest day. I love this time of year. The light is very different, intense. Even on a cloudy day the silver blue-grey of the clouds, or the brooding indigo of an impending storm, glow from within. The roses and orange blossom shine with a brilliance and iridescence that leaps towards the eye.

The vivid gleaming green of the hedgerows, forests and fields seem to reflect back the brightness of the sun.

Everywhere looks so alive, so luminous.

The air above the field is busy with fluttering swifts hunting invisible prey. When they have had their fill, they have fun. They switch from their nimble, reactive flight to the sheer joy of flight; cleaving through the air as though on smooth highways of oxygen.

I love to lean over the wall and just watch them. In the quiet of the evening I listen to the sough of the air as it rushes over their wings… These birds are an element of the air.

I love it. I love all of it and love it more because it is so transient. Each moment enjoyed is so precious; I want to hold it, keep it here, even as it slips through my fingers… …

Enjoy the brief luminosityand exuberant beauty of June.
