How Do you Speak to Yourself?

A couple of incidents this week have reminded me how important it is to be aware of the words we say to ourselves. Arethey positive. Do we end up as lots of blue fishes, or a stand out rainbow coloured fish?

The first one occurred yesterday. Just to test out the idea, after we had completed a kinesiology test with muscle testing, I asked my client to say, “I can”; her arm tested strong or “switched on”.

Then, without relating it to any particular action or event, I asked her to say, “I can’t”. Those two words depleted her energy so much she was unable to hold her arm firm and it sank from a horizontal position right down to the side of her body. When she said, “I can” her arm was switched on/strong again, remaining horizontal and level with her shoulder. I was surprised how two little words could have such an effect on our energy. (I liked the picture even though the words aren’t the same! My next experiment will be with the words I’m not/I am).

If trying to arrange an appointment, maybe try saying, “I have another engagement at that time, shall we arrange to meet on a different day?” – or (fewer!) words to that effect, rather than saying, “I can’t see you then”. It would be interesting to notice the change in your energy levels during the working day, especially if you have to fit in several meetings in a short time frame with other busy people.

Today I was talking to a friend who was recounting how she had mislaid her car keys. Before taking the dog for a walk she repeated to herself, “I mustn’t lose the keys” “Be careful not to lose the keys”, “Don’t lose the keys”. You can guess what happened, she lost the keys.

The subconscious takes no notice of negative words like ‘don’t’, ‘not’, ‘mustn’t’. All it heard was “lose the keys” so it did. As she was telling me she realized how it was she lost them. She’d told herself to do just that. Ah! Better to have said, ‘keep the keys safe’, ‘hold onto the keys’, or ‘bring the keys home’. It is the same when we want to remember to do something. How often have you said, ‘ I mustn’t forget to do…’, ‘don’t let me forget…’ only to forget all about it until days later. Aargh!

If your work is tiring you out more than you would expect, reflect on the words you use to encourage or guide yourself. As Henry Ford said, ”Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’ll be right” – so you may as well think you can!

Have a good rest of the week and an enjoyable Bank Holiday weekend.
