What do you know about Allergies?

Allergies have been in the news lately because food producers must list every single ingredient, no matter how small. One unlisted ingredient caused a major reaction in a girl and she died. Another reaction might be a mild rash, itchy skin, even eczema. Do these reactions come from the same cause? No, probably not.

The first reaction is an abnormal response of the immune system by IgE antibodies very soon after exposure to the allergen. It may produce an anaphylactic shock immediately that can result in death unless one has an epipen to hand. Be aware, the first reaction may be mild – just a tingle on the lips, tongue or throat. It would be a good plan to avoid whatever you are eating or drinking at that time and see your Doctor.  A true allergy is a medical condition. A simple test at the hospital will identify which antibodies are involved and advise accordingly. It could save your life. The allergens can vary from person to person, which is why you need to get tested.

IBS, itchy skin, sweaty hands when you haven’t been running, brain fog, aching joints, sneezing, runny nose – symptoms that come and go – these may all be caused by IgG immune responses and are generally referred to as sensitivities. These are difficult to identify because they can appear up to four days after exposure to the allergen. If the reaction is to pollen it is known as hay fever.

Clinical experience has shown that a variety of reactions can be of this kind of sensitivity and can be identified using muscle resistance testing. This is an interesting way for you to experience yourself what is going on and has been proven to be helpful for over 50 years clinical experience by the Institute for Allergy and Environmental Therapists. I had one client whose knees felt like water moments after going into a sports shoe shop or had a feeling of panic in a clothes shop. It seemed bizarre, until she found the cause. She was reacting to some fumes given off by the shoes and clothes –  formalin, a preservative used in many products. Once she was desensitised to this substance her shopping trips were much more relaxed. Another had hay fever at a specific time of the year. We found she was reacting to birch pollen. She was given remedial drops and became symptom free.

If you feel you may be experiencing some sensitivity, and there is no medical cause, contact Wendy on wendyguilfoyle@hotmail.com or 07733221941 for a test and for remedial treatment.

Thank you. Keep well.
