Myths about Meditation

#1.  First of all, I have to still my thoughts and/or empty my mind.

That is setting things up to fail. 70,000 to 80,000 thoughts arrive in your brain through the day with no effort on your part. Keep breathing and the thoughts slow down.#2. Something special or transcendent is supposed to happen when I’m meditating.

It may do, but nothing is meant to happen during a session. It is after the session that you may notice a difference in how you respond to a situation. You could feel more focused, more expansive creatively, more intuitive, compassionate, and open to infinite possibilities.

#3. I think I’m doing it wrong.

Davidji, an internationally renowned teacher has said, “If you are trying to meditate you are doing it right. If you are not trying at all, then you are doing it wrong”. Our mind will wander away. The secret is to just notice it has, then bring your mind back to the object of your concentration. The practice is one of flowing into the meditation, flowing out, then flowing back again. After a period of practice the mind will quieten more as your powers of concentration improve.

#4. If I meditate long enough I will achieve “enlightenment”.

You may or may not; it may be a matter of grace. What you are aiming for is to sink into that well of inner stillness and silence that dwells within.

#5. If I meditate I become a Superior Being because I am the “spiritual one”.

When you meditate regularly you will find that such egotistical attitudes are seen as just that and allowed to float away.

Relax and give the process a try.
