Taking Care of your Immune System

The immune system protects us against infection, clears damaged tissue and keeps a constant surveillance of abnormal cells in the body. It needs to be balanced so that it doesn’t get over-vigilant and give an unwanted response to healthy tissue.

What and where is it exactly?

All parts of the body that are in contact with the outside world are our first line of defence – the skin, cornea, moist linings of respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. Some have their own battery of white blood cells, which detect invaders and quickly mobilise to destroy them e.g. your gut and lungs. (Although technically “inside” your body, it is actually in contact with the outside world through your food and in the case of lungs, your breath). The immune cells are always on alert.

However, lifestyle, environment, diet and nutrition as well as too much physical and emotional stress can adversely affect the efficiency of the system.

If life is very busy and you get swept up in it all – very exciting and congratulations – but make sure you get off the treadmill regularly. Taking a break recharges your batteries and promotes clearer thinking rather than pushing on through the tiredness and tension all the time. A brisk walk out side in the park/wood/ campus/round the block can help reset the body. Relax with a calming meditation everyday (something millionaires make time for) and slow deep breathing (think 3-4-5: in through your nose for a count of 3, hold for 4, breathe out through pursed lips for 5. Repeat 3 or 4 times. This can be done anywhere anytime.
