Health and Wellbeing – what does that mean to you?

A lot is written about health and wellbeing – how to get it, how to maintain it, how to get more of it. What does being healthy mean to you? Is it absence of painful, even life-threatening symptoms and diseases? Being able to run a marathon? Walking a mile or two without it hurting or getting short of breath? Wellbeing is an even more vague concept – energetic, happy, and relaxed?

Here are two suggestions for your consideration. One is taken from a centuries old eastern tradition of healthcare. The other is taken from a seer and philosopher from the early part of the 20th Century.

The Ayurvedic tradition states that health is when one’s emotion and physical being are in balance and integrated. There are three Doshas – Pitta, Vatta and Kapha. When these are in balance, according to our body type, then we recover health and a sense of wellbeing. There are Ayurvedic Practitioners around if you feel inspired to enquire further the benefits of this ancient health system.

Steiner identified 7 conditions essential for our personal and spiritual growth.

  1. To take personal responsibility for our wellbeing at all the different levels of life – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual – based on inner guidance. It is not “one size fits all”.
  2. To develop empathy. To be empathetic we move from taking outside judgment to understanding the other person from inside their point of view. It is not “sympathy”.
  3. To commit to regarding inner life as real – one’s feelings, hunches, imagination, inspiration, ideas.
  4. To maintain healthy boundaries between my physical space and yours and between your truth and that of another.
  5. To create a clear path between resolution and action.
  6. To express gratitude as a regular mode of being. (Over 100 years later we are catching up with this condition. Keeping a “gratitude journal” is something that comes up on face book from time to time and is a good way to remember what is good in your life rather than dwelling on what is wrong. Where your attention goes, the energy grows.)
  7. To consistently fulfill these 6 conditions continuously.

Next time, I will examine some up to date ideas about health and wellbeing.
